Behind the Sticks | Episode 3: A Matte Lip Crayon Love Story
Written by Jenn Kapahi February 06, 2020
Before I started trèStiQue, I was a Global Product Developer at Revlon where I worked on just about every product category. Out of all of them, the Lip Category was my absolute favorite. From the variety of textures and colors to the different formats, everything about lip products were so exciting to me.
Back then, traditional formats like lipstick and lip gloss were the most common and lip stains were just beginning to gain popularity. During my time at Revlon, I developed the Just Bitten Lipstain, an innovative lipstain hybrid in a crayon format, which ended up being one of their most successful launches. For me, this product changed the way I applied makeup and how I viewed my everyday beauty routine. I loved how easy and portable the crayon packaging was and that I could apply it one-handed.
Fast forward to the creation of trèStiQue; I wanted to create a brand that focused on the ease of a crayon/stick based routine, but was unique. We designed our packaging to have magnetic custom caps that are not only great for keeping the formulas fresh & mess-free, but are also fun and have a satisfying click to them. Our full-size products also include a custom tool that works seamlessly with their respective formulas, allowing for effortless, on-the-go application.
When trèStiQue first launched, one of our first products was our Matte Lip Crayons. We designed the tip of the lip crayon to be pointed, so that it has the precision of a lip liner, but you can also propel the crayon upwards and use the side to fill in and create a full lip look.
The formula itself is a unique combination of a gel and matte texture. Traditional matte formulas tend to be very heavy & dry and can be uncomfortable to wear throughout the day. With our Matte Lip Crayon, you get a lot more hydration and glide with a beautiful matte finish. It's so easy to use you can even multitask while applying (just watch me!). The BB balm on the end cap moisturizes, conditions and provides healing benefits. If you want to change up the finish, just use the balm to add shine!
When I was developing the shades and names for our crayons, I was inspired by travel as well as places that have a special place in my heart. Growing up on a farm, I always had bright, beautiful colors surrounding me. I specifically remember the chili peppers we grew that came in every color you could think of. When coming up with our Chile Red shade (one of my faves), I was inspired by the gorgeous red color of those rainbow colored mini chili pepper plants.
For our Tuscan Wine shade, I was inspired by my travels to Forte dei Marmi, a beautiful seaside town in Tuscany. The women who lived there were so chic - they dressed casually for the beach, but then in the evening, they would dress up for dinner. They always wore a beautiful burgundy lip color, which inspired the shade of Tuscan Wine.
Our Barcelona Bright Berry shade will always have a special meaning to me because it's the city where I fell in love with my husband. When I was in college, we studied abroad in Barcelona and being poor college students, we always drank sangria, which in Spain was cheaper than bottled water. We would go out at night and there would be huge glass pitchers of sangria, where you could see the beautiful fuschia tone of the drink with the pink berries and fruits. The fuschia pink color of this shade will always remind me of the vibrant atmosphere of the city, which was reflected everywhere from the flowers to the nightlife.
